Afrofuturism Exhibition Guide

CLIENT: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & CULTURE

Designed at Eighty2degrees, creative direction by Ambica Prakash & original concept by Hannah Fichandler

With the launch of a year-long exhibit around Afrofuturism, NMAAHC reached out to Eighty2degrees to create an exhibition guide to highlight key artifacts and visitor pathways. To highlight the subject matter in each focus area, I created collages for the report’s introductory pages. The dynamic use of pattern, typography, and layering imagery in each collage expresses the importance of each focus area.

I treated each section in the guide as a visual representation of the exhibit. The visual language draws on color, shape, texture, and typography in the space. Large washes of gold are used as a nod to the gold “portals” in the exhibition, creating transitions from one space to the next.
